CDNOW.Com is the leader in music sales over
the world wide web and internet. There are few critics to one of
the first and perhaps one of the best e-commerce sites on the web.

The Site
Before the word e-commerce was ringing in every internet users ears,
there was cdnow.com. Its simplistic concept was that you could buy items
conveniently from your computer with very little worry. CDNOW.com helped
create the world of internet shopping with its secure servers and online
safety. Amazingly unlike many sites that died off when the internet craze
struck, CDNOW.com kept up its natural quality, and charming sophistication.
No one else seemed to come around to challenge them, even there name is
symbolic of the whole concept of the internet, I want that CD and I want
it NOW. No waiting in line, no traffic jams, I want to order it and I want
the anticipation of it coming in the mail in the next few days. Along the
way this site has added many features that make it great. First off are
the "Real Audio" TM sound clips. This helps the person buying the cd feel
like they are actually interacting with the site, and also allows them
to preview at least 4-5 songs on the cd. The second feature I love about
this site, is it "Album Advisor" TM, now many people might pass by this
feature when exploring CDNOW.COM , It will recommend you new artists based
on your purchase habits.
Now say I wanted to order a CD online.
I wanted to do this because there was this great song I loved from my youth
called "Peanut Butter and Jelly" and it was kind of rappy, but I couldn't
remember who sang it. My chances of finding this title inside my local
"music store" would be kind of exhaustive and I doubt the kid across the
counter was going to be very much help to me. So I go into CDNOW and I
tell its search engine to search the word "peanut" under song titles. Well
what comes up.. Well I see Barney, and Jimmy Buffet, and then I see what
I wanted "Peanut Butter and Jelly by the Beastie Boys.
So I click on Body Movin' Part 1 because that's the name of the album.
I look over the album and notice, its only a cd single, I think I want
more music then that. . So I then click on the group name "The Beastie
Boys" and they display for me all the albums the Beastie Boys have. I decide
there latest Album "Hello Nasty" is the title I would like to purchase.
So I click on the link to it and it takes me to a larger page. IT displays
not only the price but shows me a picture of the cd cover and gives me
the option to read the reviews of the cd by both Rolling Stone and MTV.
Below are examples of how CDNOW allows you to listen to parts of the songs
on the album.

It is very difficult to get lost or confused inside CDNOW.com , and
yet it is easier then anywhere I have found to find that song you fell
in love to, or that cd that you lost out of your cd collection.
Design
Well, I happen to be partial to Blue and a neat design. CDNOW has a
simple yet elegant logo that is hard not to like. It sets up its page very
well, with a constant way to return to wherever you were. Although its
simple white background is not a ground breaking concept it does make the
site easy to look at and probably easier to navigate. Much like Amazon.com,
this site is ruled by content, and I don't think that's all that bad.
Ordering
Now that we have found our cd or cds its just about time to order these
items so I can start enjoying them as soon as possible. CDnow.com runs
on the standard "shopping cart" system, as you go along you put items in
your shopping cart and when you are done you go to the checkout. Once you
are in the checkout you have to fill out the normal information, nothing
real easy or real hard with ordering at this site. The site does offer
gift wrapping and has relatively reasonable shipping prices.
Overall Assessment
CDNOW.com is the first and the best of the online
music stores. Cdnow is now competing not only with young upstarts, but
now the big players such as Columbia House and BMG. It will be hard for
this site to hold the sort of dominance it has taken for granted for so
long. For now though, with its listen while you shop feature, and its simple
yet sleek look CDNOW.com is definitely worth your shopping dollar.
